Come join us as we study topics of mutual interest. Beginning in September we will view and discuss the video “The Bible’s Buried Secrets”. In this landmark two-hour PBS special, NOVA takes viewers on a fascinating scientific journey that began 3,000 years ago and continues today. This archeological detective story tackles some of the biggest questions in Old Testament studies: Where did the ancient Israelites come from? Who wrote the Bible, when, and why? How did the worship of one God – the foundation of modern Judaism, Islam, and Christianity – emerge? Other videos will follow.

We will be continuing our study on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's book, ETHICS. Bonhoeffer was a theologian and philosopher during the era of WW II. He wrote several books before he was interned in a German Nazi Concentration Camp for his outspoken views. ETHICS was a book that he wrote while in the Concentration Camp. It was buried throughout the Camp and is considered to be his best written work. He was ordered to be killed by Hitler thirty days before allied troops reached the Camp. Ethics is the subject of man to man or God to man's significance. Contact the Church Office if you need a copy of the book.

OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE WEEK
Located
In the Confirmation Room (next to Choir Room)
It’s one thing to learn what the Bible says and another to discover how it applies to our daily lives. In this group anyone can raise an issue or question from our lives today and ask how the Bible can guide us. Questions on a particular Bible passage are welcome too. No issue or question is taboo, and what we discover may surprise us. So get out your Bible and come join us! We’ll meet in the Confirmation Room at 7 pm on the 1st Wednesday of each month, beginning October 7th.

"Bad Girls of the Bible"
By Liz Curtis Higgs |
Adult |
 |
Women everywhere marvel at those “good girls” in Scripture–Sarah, Mary, Esther–but on most days, that’s not who we see when we look in the mirror. Most women (if we’re honest) see the selfishness of Sapphira or the deception of Delilah. They catch of glimpse of Jezebel’s take-charge pride or Eve’s disastrous disobedience. Like Bathsheba, Herodias, and the rest, today’s modern woman is surrounded by temptations, exhausted by the demands of daily living, and burdened by our own desires.
So what’s a girl to do? Learn from their lives, says beloved humor writer Liz Curtis Higgs, and by God’s grace, choose a better path. In Bad Girls of the Bible, Higgs offers a unique and clear-sighted approach to understanding those “other women” in Scripture, combining a contemporary retelling of their stories with a solid, verse-by-verse study of their mistakes and what lessons women today can learn from them. With her trademark humor and encouragement, Liz Curtis Higgs teaches us how to avoid their tragic mistakes and joyfully embrace grace.
Come for a special women’s night out! Bring a friend
Monday- October 12, 2009
7:00-8:30PM
Pastor Susan Lockman will present one “Bad Girl of the Bible” through an inter-active Bible Study that will include drama, conversation, prayer, laughter and tears. At the end of the evening, we’ll be forming small groups for any women who would like to continue the study. |
